Dostoevsky’s classic discussion on authority, “The Grand Inquisitor,” dramatizes the psychological force of domination. In it, Christ returns to earth during the Inquisition and confronts the Inquisitor with the Church’s debasement of faith: Why has a free act of love been transformed into a practice of submission? The Inquisitor responds that people do not want freedom and truth, which only cause deprivation and suffering; they want miracle, mystery, and authority. The pain that accompanies compliance is preferable to the pain that attends to freedom.-Jessica Benjamin and Dostoevsky
