Put Down Your Body: deeply evangelical, yet overtly sensual lyrics

When I was in third grade I became very interested in songwriting. My friend Danelle and I began the pursuit of becoming singers. I mostly did the writing and she mostly did the singing since I had a “traumatic” experience with a school solo the previous year. I missed the beat and it was a fast paced, staccato rhythm, proving to be a sorely obvious mistake because I couldn’t find the beat from that point on. It was like running after an accelerating train. Plus, my mom was the music director. Crushed.

However devastated I was, which I was, I continued to pour into songs. Between 3rd grade and 6th grade I had written around 40 songs. Here’s one that made me giggle due to its proselytizing, yet sensualizing words:

“Put Down Your Body”

Your earthly body

Born here on earth

A new birth

But when it’s time to go

You’ll have a heavenly flow

Because you

(chorus)

Put down your body

And you put up your soul

You needn’t pay a toll

Put down your body

Put down your body

(2nd verse)

When you feel a sensation

You’ll have an inflation

Because you put up your soul

And you put down your body

And you let go so your soul can go

Because you

(repeat chorus)

(3rd verse)

You want to have a heart that is true

I want to see

You and me up there too

Live anew heavenly life

With Christ

And you

(repeat chorus)

  1. “But when it’s time to go, you’ll have a heavenly flow.” OMG, I just peed my pants laughing.

  2. “You’ll have an inflation”… yes, yes you will.
